EXACTLY five years and one week ago, Hawthorn traded away an end of first round draft pick.

The Hawks gave pick 27 and pick 71 to North Melbourne, in exchange for ruckman-forward David Hale and pick 52.

It turned out to be a brilliant trade for the Hawks.

Hale, who had played 129 games for the Kangaroos across eight seasons, went on to play 108 games for the Hawks.

He kicked 98 goals, retiring as a triple premiership player earlier this month, after the Hawks’ premiership three-peat.

The Hawks used pick 52 to trade in medium-sized defender Kyle Cheney (who now plays for Adelaide) from Melbourne.

They also received pick 66 as part of the Cheney deal.

Pick 66 was used to recruit a mature-aged player from Norwood, Paul Puopolo, who has since played in 111 games and three premierships for the club.
