The Hawks are celebrating grassroots sport in Round 7, hawthornfc.com.au has jumped on board, highlighting a pathway story from one of our Hawks stars each day.
Originally from Cootamundra, New South Wales, Isaac Smith was studying at the University of Ballarat and playing with local side Redan in 2010 before his football career took an exciting turn.
Midway through the year he was invited onto North Ballarat's VFL list and after just three games in the VFL reserves, Smith managed to break into the senior side.
An exceptional VFL finals series performance followed and before he had time to blink he was drafted by Hawthorn with its first pick, No. 19, in the 2010 national draft.
Even with the move to the big smoke, 600kms from his junior club the Temora Kangaroos, Smith was never too far from his country football roots. The speedy midfielder finding himself once again lining up besides Luke Breust and Matthew Suckling, two boys he played alongside many years ago in the Riverina.
