Extra attention can lead to the complete devotion of an opposition player to you and only you for the entirety of a game.

This has essentially been Jaeger O’Meara’s season to date in a nutshell.

O’Meara’s first five appearances this season saw him average 30.8 touches and a goal as he kept pace with the competition’s elite on-ballers.

Naturally, this level of production is something opposition coaches want to curtail and, over the past fortnight, Melbourne Coach Simon Goodwin and GWS Coach Leon Cameron have done just that, deploying James Harmes and Matt de Boer respectively.

The 25-year-old Hawk has managed 17 disposals and a goal over this period as he continues to adapt to this new reality as Hawthorn’s premier midfielder.

But with a team-high five clearances and seven tackles on the weekend, O’Meara can rightfully remain proud of his output.

"I felt like I was still able to make a contribution to the team," O'Meara said of his performance against GWS.

"It obviously makes it a little bit tougher (when I'm tagged), but it's not something that I'm going to complain about.

"I'll prepare accordingly. I've got Sam Mitchell and Tom Mitchell here and both have had tags their whole careers, so I've been picking their brains and trying to learn a few things.

"I'll continue to try to get better."
