Hawthorn Coach Alastair Clarkson has cited a disconnect between his side’s midfield and forward line as a key reason for its loss on Friday night.
Despite taking a one-point lead into the first change, Clarkson said the opening term was full of missed opportunities for the Hawks that ultimately hurt his team on the night.
“In the first quarter, I thought we were the better side,” Clarkson said.
“But we played into their hands going forward too much in the early parts of the game.
“I think we had 19 inside 50s but didn’t take a mark in there in the first quarter.
“So, that’s not a great reflection of your ball-use and unfortunately that meant we were only able to score two goals when perhaps that type of inside 50 dominance should have you kicking four or five goals.
But it was the third quarter that saw Essendon gain its greatest advantage on the scoreboard, as the Bombers booted five goals to the Hawks’ two to wrench the momentum their way.
“It was unfortunate that we couldn’t match them in the third quarter to make it a real competitive game.
“I’m glad we fought it out.
“There was some good signs for us but we just lacked a bit of composure with the footy at important stages.”
