Hawthorn Football Club has enlisted some of Melbourne’s top street artists to turn the city brown and gold, ahead of their first home game of the 2019 season.

The club has commissioned three bespoke works in key areas of Hawthorn heartland to encapsulate what it means to be always Hawthorn.  The murals adorn walls near the club’s spiritual home, Glenferrie Oval, home ground, the MCG and the Hawks’ current base at Waverley Park.

The unique project embraces Melbourne’s love of both football and art and aims to bring to life key stories of the Hawthorn Football Club.

World renowned artist, Adnate, has produced his interpretation of Always, through a large-scale mural of Hawthorn superstar, Shaun Burgoyne.

The portrait was created over five-days and is situated across the road from the MCG.

Joining Adnate in producing works for the campaign, are illustrator, artist and muralist Justine McAllister and Melbourne based digital and street-artist Ohnoes.

McAllister’s work spreads throughout the heart of Hawthorn, beginning with a large-scale mural on Linda Crescent and adorning a series of meter boxes along Burwood and Glenferrie Road. Her works focus on bringing the Hawthorn’s unique colours to the streets of their heartland and paying tribute to some of the great players to have worn the brown and gold.

Ohnoes work at Hawthorn’s home base brings Waverley Park stadium to life, celebrating some of the club stars that have donned the number 24 guernsey, including current Skipper Ben Stratton.

“This is a really unique approach to advertising and storytelling, and we are really proud of the final outcome,” said Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves.

“Following the re-launch of our Always campaign late last year, we continue to seek modern ways to share the stories and history of Hawthorn. We felt that through art there was a real opportunity to create something that our fans and members could enjoy and engage with.”

The locations of each work are as follows:

● Jumper 24 Mural - Waverley Park, Mulgrave

● Always Mural - Corner of Linda Crescent and Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn

● Shaun Burgoyne Mural – Corner of Punt Rd and The Crofts, Richmond

There are also sevel traffic monitor boxes located along Burwood Rd, Hawthorn (from Bunnings to Swinburne Uni) with similar artwork.
