We never thought we’d say this but here goes…

Go Blues!

It’s not an easy task but, in looking at the match-up between Adelaide and Carlton in the AFLW grand final this Sunday, it seems our only choice.

While Hawthorn VFLW premiership player Sarah Perkins has been a Crow since their inaugural season in the AFLW, that is just about where the links with the South Australians end.

Whereas the Hawks have numerous associations with the Carlton side who will be vying for their maiden AFLW premiership this weekend.

First-year players Jayde Van Dyk and Emerson Woods joined the Blues in the 2018 draft and have both made appearances for the grand finalists this season.

Taken with Pick 21 in last year’s draft, Van Dyk has played in all seven games this year while 19-year-old Woods played just the one - her AFLW debut in Round 5.

Another relation we have to the navy Blue is through our new female number one ticket holder Emma Race.

Race is married to media personality Andy Maher, a famous Carlton tragic who has been the runner for its women’s side this season.

Having not seen his beloved Blues win any silverware since 1995, we know it would mean a lot to Andy, and Andy means a lot to Emma, and Emma means a lot to us, so maybe this could be enough to get you over the line?

Or perhaps, the final link is the clincher.

Daniel Harford played 153 games for the Hawks between 1995 and 2003.

‘Harf’ remains a part of Hawthorn as the MC of many of the club’s events.

In his first year as coach of the Blues, Harford has led the club from a wooden spoon finish in 2018 to grand finalists the following year.

So, will these reasons be enough to get you on board the Blues bandwagon for just this week?

It’s a hard concept to wrap your head around, we know. But it’s only temporary; soon enough, we’ll have our own AFLW team to support as they pursue the first of many premierships.
