Hawthorn defender Grant Birchall says he is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel after an extensive stint on the sidelines.

Birchall has not made an appearance in Hawks colours since Round 15 2017, with knee injuries cruelling the best part of his last two seasons.

But the 2012 All Australian is optimistic about a return to the field in the not-too-distant future.

“The body is feeling pretty good,” Birchall said.

“I had a bit of a hiccup with the calf a couple of weeks ago but I’m back running at the moment.

“Hopefully in a few weeks, I’ll be back out there.”

Birchall plans to re-join the skills component of training in the next fortnight as he continues his road to recovery.

With an incredible range of experience on his resume, the 245-game, four-time premiership player says he is still trying to have an impact on the group where possible.

“I have been doing a bit of work with the guys throughout the week, more so with our ball movement stuff.

“Working with the younger guys, it’s kept me occupied.”

The 31-year-old concedes his time out of the game has taken a toll on him at times.

“It can be a bit of a grind and a bit of a mental battle at times.

“I’m really excited to get back out there again, particularly with a few of the younger guys down back at the moment who I haven’t played with.”
