Over the last three seasons, Hawthorn has had three different leading goal kickers.
Jack Gunston booted 51 majors to take out the award in 2016, Jarryd Roughead claimed top spot the following year before Luke Breust’s 2018 included an All Australian honour and the club goal kicking trophy.
It seems the days of Jason Dunstall winning the accolade 11 consecutive seasons from 1986 to 1996 or those 30 years between 1967 and 1996 were only five individuals had their names written on the honour board may be over.
Breust (53.23) narrowly pipped Gunston (51.32) in 2018 as marginally straighter kicking earned the small forward his first club goal kicking title.
With both coming off All Australian seasons, they seem likely to again be in contention for this year’s prize.
Meanwhile Roughy was the Hawks’ best in front of goal in the JLT Series loss to Richmond, registering an impressive five-goal performance.
Could the 32-year-old become the 10th player in the club’s history to win the award four times or more?
The Hawks goal kicking count poses as yet another tight tussle in 2019.
So, where do you sit? Who do you think will kick the most goals for the brown and gold this year – one of the three premiership players or will the trend continue with another fresh name? A Puopolo or a Wingard perhaps?
