A column written for you by former Hawk, and full time Hawks fan, Jack Fitzpatrick.
Hello my fellow Hawks fans (and anyone else that isn’t a fan but loves reading my stuff anyway). It’s already the end of Round 6 and The Mighty Hawks sit in the top four – what a start to the year they boys have had!
It has been a little while since you last heard from me, but I think this James Worpel edition of Fitzy’s Focus is well worth the wait. Let me take you back to the middle of February, where – after AFLX – I said this about Hawthorn’s newest debutant:
“Last but by no means least, I have a new man crush… James Worpel; the hair, the physique and the hardiness. I have never met you, and I don’t know what nickname the boys have got for you, but I have one that I’m determined to get going amongst us supporters – The Worpedo!!”
In disappointing news, it has since been brought to my attention that I was not the first to come up with this nickname (and also probably not the first to have a man crush – or crush of any kind – on our number 38). However, I’m definitely claiming to be the first “journalist” to have used it.
Furthermore (yes, I just said furthermore – can you tell I’m back at university?), I have gone one step further and come up with a song that I’m sure many of us Hawks fans can sing about our blonde bombshell.
I must say, I am very proud of my work here. It’s probably the most romantic thing I’ve ever done (sadly, that part isn’t a joke and it’s not something I’m overly proud of). However, it is said that the only difference between romance and creepiness is whether or not the recipient is interested; and, considering I’m still yet to meet The Worpedo, this probably falls more in the creepy category. Anyway, I digress…
With no more gilding the lily, please let me introduce you to a song that I feel speaks on behalf of all us Hawk diehards. A song simply called W.O.R.P.E.L, sung to the tune of Nat King Cole’s L.O.V.E. Turn on the backing track and sing away;
W – is for the way he Wins, the ball
O – is for the Only One, we see
R – is Really, Really extraordinary
P – is Pretty much more than anyone else that we adore
E – is Everything thing he gives, to us
L – ove is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
You have our heart please don’t break it
Worps, he plays for me and you!
As always, feel free to submit your feedback (good or bad), or suggestions on where I can focus my attention next, to Twitter, either @HawthornFC or @jfitzpatrick_t1 with the hashtag #FitzysFocus
Also, keep your eyes and ears open as there might just be a Hawk related Podcast coming your way in the not so distance future!
