As we edge closer to the start of the 2018 season, AFL Fantasy coaches around the country are beginning to prepare their squads in anticipation.
We take a look at which Hawks might feature at Fantasy selection tables around the country.
Most expensive: Ryan Burton ($594,000)
Coming off a stellar year in 2017, Burton kicks off the new season as one of the most prized backman in AFL Fantasy. Breaking into the top 20 most expensive defenders in the league, Burton was a revelation last season, averaging 21.3 disposals, 5.7 marks and 84.4 Fantasy points. With the likes of Luke Hodge and Josh Gibson departing the club’s back six, Burton is set to take further ownership of the Hawks defensive line and that could mean greater dominance in the Fantasy world too!
The stalwart: Grant Birchall ($485,000)
Grant Birchall has been one of the most reliable defenders in AFL Fantasy throughout his entire career. Before a spate of injuries severely interrupted his 2017 season in which he managed just five games, the Tasmanian had gone six consecutive seasons of averaging 80 points per game or better. The 29-year old now figures as one of the bargain buys of 2018, with his going rate the lowest it has been in seven seasons.
Best buy: James Sicily ($523,000)
James Sicily’s switch to defence over the final 10 games last year was one of the feel-good stories at Hawthorn in 2017. The 23-year old emerged as one of the game’s leading interceptors. Over the course of that period, Sicily averaged 89.8 Fantasy points from his 24.1 possessions and 9.1 marks. It is going to be difficult for coaches to ignore these numbers come selection time!
Young gun: Harry Morrison
It was only one game but, boy, was it impressive! In his senior debut in Round 23 last year against the Western Bulldogs, Harry Morrison gathered 21 disposals, six marks and 75 Fantasy points. The 19-year old proved his ball-getting ability over his 18 games with Box Hill, where he averaged 86 points. Morrison has been one of the most impressive performers in the Hawks pre-season this summer and could be in line for more senior action in 2018.
