The Rundown

After leading at quarter time Hawthorn were comprehensively outplayed for the remaining three quarters.

The Hawks jumped out to an 18-point lead, kicking four of the first five goals as Jack Gunston popped up for the Hawks’ first couple, while midfield pair Tom Mitchell and Isaac Smith also hit the scoreboard.

But from there, Brisbane kicked 19 goals to the Hawks’ seven, with midfield trio Dayne Zorko (30 disposals), Dayne Beams (28) and Hugh McCluggage (27) leading the way as the Lions moved the ball through the middle with ease.

Former Hawks skipper Luke Hodge was also impressive against his old side, gathering 19 disposals as he played an important role across half back, while young Forward Eric Hipwood (four goals) was dominant up forward as the Lions stormed to a 56-point win.

For the Hawks, Gunston finished with four goals of his own, while Tom Mitchell again had plenty of the ball, picking up 46 disposals.

The Star

Young Lion McCluggage played arguably the best game of his two-season career, with his 27 disposals his best yet, while he also recorded a team-high 16 contested possessions. The former No. 3 Pick was as influential as anyone on the ground, particularly when the game was there to be won.

The Moment

Key defender Harris Andrews intercepted a long kick out of the Hawks defence with a high-leaping contested mark across half back, early in the final term.  The 21-year-old handed the ball off to the running Dayne Zorko who pumped the ball long inside 50, where Lion Allen Christensen was able to crumb the spilt ball and shark an all-important goal, pushing the side’s lead out to 45 points and quashing any hope of a Hawks comeback.

The Coach

“We couldn’t change the momentum of the game, we tried a lot of things but to the credit of their side and their play they didn’t allow us to get back into the contest.”
