The Rundown

Sitting 17th on the ladder heading into Round 14, the Hawks headed to Adelaide for the second time in four weeks, hoping to cause an upset over the top-of-the-ladder Crows.

Early goals to Shaun Burgoyne and captain Jarryd Roughead gave the Hawks the early jump over their opposition before Adelaide pegged their way back to build an 18-point lead heading into half time.

But a three-goal-to-one third term swung the momentum the Hawks’ way with much thanks to Ryan Burton who nailed a pair of long range goals.

Five points down heading into the final quarter, former Crow Ricky Henderson slotted his first of two goals for the term to draw scores level before Hawthorn piled on four of the next six to sow up an impressive 14 point win over the Crows.

It was an excellent defensive effort by the Hawks who managed to tame Adelaide’s multi-pronged forward line, as well as holding star midfielder Rory Sloane to just 23 touches.

Tom Mitchell again played an integral role through the midfield with 38 disposals while Shaun Burgoyne (26 disposals) and Grant Birchall (28 disposals) were also crucial.

The Star

Ricky Henderson shone against his former club in what was his 100th game.

The wingman scored two critical goals with the game on the line in the last quarter and had a season-high 30 disposals at an impressive 90% efficiency.

The Moment

With four minutes remaining in the final term, Shaun Burgoyne laid a desperate tackle on Crows defender Jake Kelly with the ball spilling out and Burgoyne awarded the free kick for holding the ball.

40 metres out from goal, Burgoyne kicked truly to put the game out the Adelaide’s reach, extending the Hawks’ lead to 19 points.

The Coach

“I think we saw some of the future of the Hawthorn defence on display tonight with Brand and Hardwick and Burton and Sicily all played important roles for us in the back end but that’s just complemented beautifully by the experience of the older guys like Duryea and Hodge and Birchall,”
