A message from President Jeff Kennett on the passing of senior journalist Michael Gordon.
Dear Hawkers,
If you have not already heard, I am sorry to inform you of the death of Michael Gordon.
He was, up until late last year, a senior journalist with the Age Newspaper.
His last assignment was as their political editor covering politics in Canberra.
Michael was a journalist of distinction. His research and his use of the English language made him part of an elite group of journalists respected by all sides of politics, his peers and those who read his considered output.
Michael’s career in journalism of over 45 years saw him work at all our major papers, but mainly The Age, in senior positions here and overseas.
He was highly decorated by his peers winning the Walkley Award for the most outstanding contribution to journalism only last year.
Perhaps more importantly for we Hawthorn supporters, Michael and his father Harry edited and updated the book on Hawthorns history, The Hard Way.
Michael was always at the club, at games, observing every facet of the club for the a new edition of what is the definitive record of Hawthorn.
He died this morning while competing in an ocean swim at Cowes.
We mourn Michael’s death at only 62 years of age, when he was looking forward to embarking on the next lap of his career.
To his wife Robyn, son Scott, daughter Sarah, son in law James, and recently arrived grandson Harry (named after Michael’s Father), our sincere condolences.
We thank Michael for the lasting legacy and record he has left the Hawthorn Football Club and future generations of our members and supporters.
