The 2018 Brownlow Medal count has been and gone.

This year’s All Australian team has been named.

The Peter Crimmins Medal has returned to its previous owner.

And the Leigh Matthews Trophy for the AFLPA’s Most Valuable Player is also in its rightful place.

Tom Mitchell featured heavily in the awarding of these honours, but his trophy cabinet may have to find more space yet.

Mitchell was announced as one of 15 nominees for the ABC Sport Personality of the Year on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Hawk is vying for the award among an all-star cast which includes NBA superstar Ben Simmons, rugby league great Billy Slater and cricketer Ellyse Perry.

The AIS, in partnership with ABC Grandstand, has launched a public vote to determine the winner, with the presentation of the award announced in Sydney on Thursday 13 December.

AIS Director Peter Conde says the award is a way for all Australians to join in and celebrate their love of sport.

“Discussing our favourite athletes, performances and the weekend results is almost a national sport in itself,” Conde said.

“The AIS is proud to lead the Australian high-performance sport system because we know the national pride and inspiration generated by the endeavour and success of our Australian athletes.”
