The Rundown
Having met Collingwood just six weeks earlier, the memory of the two sides’ previous encounter was fresh in the minds of both Hawks players and supporters.
Hawthorn had relinquished a 43-point second quarter lead to enable the Pies a miraculous victory, as the Hawks’ season continued to spiral out of control.
As it happened, this Round 15 clash had its similarities to the previous month’s disaster.
The Hawks held a comfortable five-goal buffer at the midway point of the second quarter but, again, the Pies clawed their way back to get themselves ahead at the final change by two points.
But the Hawks were too strong in the finish, kicking six goals to two in the final term to claim an important 24-point victory.
The Star
Youngster Ryan Burton continued his impressive form from the Hawks defence, collecting a career-high 29 disposals.
Burton’s composure and clean skills continued to shine on the big stage as the 20-year old continued to display a complete comfort at senior level.
The Moment
With three minutes remaining in the game, the Hawks led by 11 points with the ball deep inside their forward 50.
A Hawthorn goal, and Hawks fans could breathe easy. A Collingwood clearance, and fans would likely get much more nervous.
A stoppage five metres from the Hawthorn goal square and Jarryd Roughead competed against Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy in a crowded stoppage.
The Hawks skipper manoeuvred his body perfectly to win the tap before following up his own work, pouncing on the loose ball, slamming it on his non-preferred right foot and clinching victory for the Hawks with a memorable goal.
The Coach
"We scored 18 goals, we had 12 goal-scorers … and we just thought we probably gave Collingwood three or four more goals than we would have liked, but we can't be too fussy."
- Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson
