Almost a decade on from the 2008 Grand Final, only a few players who played on that September day remain on either Hawthorn or Geelong's list. A mere six in fact; three from each club, with Gary Ablett returning from a seven-year stint at Gold Coast to even the score.

Before we face the Cats on Easter Monday, we thought we'd throw the spotlight on those 2008 players, and see what they've achieved over the nine seasons since.

Games

Since the Hawks won the 2008 decider the Cats trio of Joel Selwood, Harry Taylor and Gary Ablett have played a total of 571 games, just edging out Cyril Rioli, Jarryd Roughead and Grant Birchall’s combined 512. While he won’t line up against Geelong on Monday, defender Birchall has been the most durable Hawk with 180 games over the last nine seasons, with Cats counterpart Harry Taylor making the most appearances of the six, despite also being unavailable for this weekend’s clash due to injury.

Goals

Boasting two of the competition’s most dangerous forwards in Roughead and Rioli, the Hawks easily have the Cats trio covered when it comes to scoring power. Roughead’s 397 seven goals since their Saturday in September in 2008 alone beats out the Cats’ 392, while Rioli is a little further back with 250.

Disposals

Unsurprisingly the Hawks concede the disposal count well and truly to the Cats, who’re armed with two of the competition’s most prolific midfielders of the last decade. Selwood leads the pack with 5,395 disposals, while Ablett also has gathered 4,932 in the same period. Grant Birchall heads the Hawks in this count with 4,062 – an impressive average of almost 23 a game.

Premierships

The most integral of the four stats, the Hawks well and truly lead the way with the number of premiership medallions won since 2008. While the Cats went on to win the flag the following season, and again in 2011 – minus Ablett – the Hawks’ three-peat spanning 2013 to 2015 ensures they take the cake.
