Recruited from De La Salle College, John Kennedy Jnr, son of Club Legend John Kennedy Snr, established a fine reputation in his own right, playing his first game aged 19.
He became an integral member of the all-conquering Hawthorn side of the 1980s, playing in all four of the 1983, 1986, 1988 and 1989 premiership teams.
His son, Josh Kennedy, currently plays for the Sydney Swans and was a member of the Swans 2012 Premiership, continuing the family legacy of premiership success.
A versatile and hard-running player, he represented Victoria in 1984 and won highly-regarded club awards such as Most Improved Player (1984), Most Determined Player (1986) and Best Team Player (1987 and 1990).
Kennedy retired in 1991, finishing an exceptional playing career that featured 241 games over 13 years.
Since his playing career, Kennedy has remained at Hawthorn in various roles.
In 1994 and 1995, he was an assistant coach to fellow former Hawk Peter Knights. Through this time, as well as 1996, he was also a Hawthorn Board member.
In 2008, Kennedy became President of Hawthorn’s Past Players and Officials Association and remains in that position today.
