Despite being drafted as a forward only 18 months ago, Blake Hardwick is showing all the hallmarks of an outstanding defender, according to Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson.

Speaking at his post-match press conference after the Hawks defeated the Demons, Clarkson said Hardwick’s key attributes as a player suggested he would be strong in defence.

“He’s a beautiful kick of the ball, he’s got a strong body and he’s capable overhead,” Clarkson said.

“So, we just thought he was a guy that, particularly with Birchall out of the side for the best part of the last four weeks, we needed someone who could kick the ball well and he provides us with that.”

Hardwick gathered 18 disposals and seven marks on Sunday, but perhaps the most encouraging element to his game was the 89 per cent disposal efficiency he operated at.

Over his four games this season, Hardwick has averaged 91 per cent disposal efficiency. This figure makes him the most efficient Hawk of the 2017 season (five per cent better than the next Hawk - Shaun Burgoyne - on 86), and ranks him 10th in the league.

Hardwick is averaging 17 disposals, six marks and four score involvements while playing off half back, in what shapes to be a breakout season for the versatile young defender.
