The Hawks’ 12-year winning streak against the Blues that spanned from Round 6 2005 until Saturday night was the fifth longest streak in the club’s history.
After watching that particular streak come to an end in dramatic fashion over the weekend, we thought we’d look back over other notable winning spells the club has experienced.
Five lengthy Hawthorn winning streaks have ended this year:
1. Adelaide finished a seven-game Hawks’ superiority in Round 2.
2. The following week, Gold Coast had their first win over the Hawks after failing in their first eight encounters.
3. The Saints’ win over the Hawks in Round 6 broke a six-game band of Hawthorn victories.
4. In Round 9 it was Collingwood’s turn, when their come-from-behind win stopped the Hawks from making it a tenth win in a row against the Pies.
5. And, finally, Carlton ended what was the Hawks’ longest active streak on Saturday night, putting to bed a 14-game run.

After Saturday night, Hawthorn’s new current longest winning streak is against the Brisbane Lions, whom they have beaten in their past eight meetings
Interestingly, Sydney is the side that the Hawks hold their next most enduring run against, having won each of their last three matches.
Geelong holds the greatest advantage over the Hawks at the moment, having won each of their last four match-ups.
Port Adelaide and Richmond also hold strong recent records against the Hawks with Port winning four of their last six games, while Richmond has won four of the past seven contests to also hold a slender advantage.
The Hawks haven’t got the chocolates against GWS in their last three meetings, although the most recent clash in Round 16 this year ended in a draw.
Hawthorn has been victorious in 13 of their last 15 games against Fremantle, which includes two finals and the 2013 Grand Final.
This week’s opponent, the Western Bulldogs, finished an eight-game winning run of the Hawks when they overcame the brown and gold in last year’s semi-final, the clubs’ last meeting.
Other notable dominant Hawthorn runs against opposition sides include Melbourne (Hawks have won 14 of the past 15), North Melbourne (eight of the past nine), Essendon (seven of the past nine) and West Coast (eight of the past ten).
Hawthorn’s longest winning streak of all time was between 1973 and 1984, when the boys secured 22 consecutive wins against Melbourne.
