With a fractured jaw set to hold Grant Birchall out of action for at least three weeks, coach Alastair Clarkson will be forced to make at least one change to the line-up that took on Adelaide.
The quartet that was omitted following the round one loss to Essendon all responded well, with Billy Hartung, James Sicily and Taylor Duryea all being among Box Hill’s leading ball-getters, while Ryan Schoenmakers kicked a goal in the Hawks’ three-point loss to the Casey Demons on the weekend.
Hartung amassed 30 possessions, including nine inside 50s, putting his hand up for a return to the senior side after a best on ground performance.
Clarkson may opt for a like-for-like replacement for Birchall, in which case Sicily and Duryea would likely be considered.
Sicily continued his development as a defender, helping to halt numerous Demon forward forays as well as gathering 26 possessions himself.
Duryea was reliable in defence, showing a strong level of composure as he collected 23 touches.
First-year midfielder James Cousins, who was praised by Box Hill Head Coach Chris Newman last week for the initial impression he has made at the club, was again prominent, finishing with 28 disposals and eight clearances. Dan Howe was similarly impressive, collecting 24 touches and laying six tackles. His disposal tally also included 'quite a few hard ball gets', according to Newman.
Brendan Whitecross, the carry-over emergency for Hawthorn's Round 2 clash, will also be in the minds of the match committee following an impressive VFL outing the previous week.
