GM – Football Operations Chris Fagan says the club is right behind Jarryd Roughead in his latest battle with melanoma.
The star Hawk has been ruled out of football indefinitely, after a scan revealed a recurrence of melanoma, which was first discovered in 2015.
“That’s been part of the process since he had his initial melanoma last year, on a regular basis he has to go and have a full body scan,” Fagan said.
“He’s had one previous (scan), and everything was all clear.
“This time around there are a few spots of cancer to be seen on the scan. Obviously that means there has to be a medical intervention going forward.”
The 29-year-old will undergo a biopsy to determine the best form of treatment.
Fagan said Roughead broke the news to his teammates today.
“He bravely came in today, he was fairly determined to talk to all of them,” Fagan said.
“He got that opportunity post-training today. He stood in front of the group and told them everything that had happened.
“It was quite an emotional time for Rough and for the boys, but he was determined to let them know and to also let them know that he was going to be okay.”
Fagan said Roughead has the club’s full support, and hopes he will continue to be a presence around the club.
“Footy’s our business, but we care more about the people who work here than the football,” he said.
“We’ll get around Roughy and look after him and his family and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a great outcome down the track.”
