Hawthorn Football Club launched a new schools and education program in Tasmania today that specifically targets students in year’s three to six.
Looking After ME is an online primary school program developed by Hawthorn Football Club in consultation with the Tasmanian Department of Education to ensure alignment with the Australian Curriculum.
The program aims to address issues relating to nutrition and physical activity in a way that encourages long lasting behavioural change.
“The health and wellbeing of primary school children is of utmost importance and is where many children develop habits that they carry with them later in life,” Hawthorn President Richard Garvey said.
“Our vision is to target all 175 primary schools in Tasmania and hopefully have them all on board to undertake the program.”
“We are delighted to support the Tasmanian Department of Education through the development of such a great initiative and play a role in promoting the importance of physical activity and good nutrition.”
The Minister for Education and Training Jeremy Rockliff said Hawthorn’s Looking After Me program would be a great addition to Tasmania’s education system.
“A great education is about more than just books, it’s also about the overall health and wellbeing of children.
“The Looking After ME program will encourage young Tasmanians to live a healthy life, which will help them in every aspect of their life today and every day into the future.
“I commend the Hawthorn Football Club for creating this initiative, and the partnership they have developed with the Department of Education to deliver the program.
“Tasmania’s partnership with Hawthorn continues to be a hugely valuable one, and this is another example of how we are both winners out of our ongoing deal.”
The program includes six topics which can be completed sequentially or individually to suit the needs of the school.
Each topic contains an introduction, learning outcome, a list of required resources and three activity suggestions with step by step instructions.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Education Jeremy Rockliff, Hawthorn President Richard Garvey and Grant Birchall were all in attendance at the launch at Invermay Primary School in Launceston today.
