HAWTHORN Assistant Coach Damien Carroll was named runner-up in the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award last week.
Carroll was edged out by Sydney Assistant Coach Stuart Dew, who took home the award.
The Assistant Coach of the Year Award is based on input from both players and coaches.
Coaches scores the overall performance of the assistant and development coaches at their club, allocating each a score out of 10 (10 being the highest score).
Each assistant and development coach will receive an average score out of 10 from their club’s coaching panel, which will be matched by an average score out of 10 from their playing group to determine an overall score.
Carroll finished the evening with a score of 8.96, while Stuart Dew finished with 9.4 and Melbourne Demons Assistant Simon Goodwin came in third place with 8.95.
Previously head of Hawthorn's development academy, Carroll was appointed assistant coaching in August 2015 following the departure of Brendon Bolton to the Blues senior coaching role.
Carroll stepped straight into his role and was a crucial member of the club's coaching time throughout the Hawks' 2015 finals campaign.
Now in charge of the Hawks midifield, Carroll previously held the role of Box Hill senior coach between 2010 and 2013, before being appointed the head of Hawthorn's development academy.
GM - Football Operations said coming runner-up in the Assistant Coach of the Year Award was good recognition for Carroll's hard work and commitment.
"DC has had a lot of experience here in the last four or five years, and his transition over the past 12 months has been seamless," he said.
"He is very well respected by our players and coaches and it is good to see his hard work and developmen- acknowledged."
