HAWTHORN has re-signed emerging defender Teia Miles.

The 19-year-old, now in his second year at the club, has put to pen to paper on a two-year deal which will see him remain a Hawk until at least the end of 2018.

“I was really excited when I found out,” Miles told hawthornfc.com.au.

“I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the next two years.”

The yet-to-debut Hawk has been one of Box Hill’s most consistent performers in 2016, switching between attack and defence in his 14 games, averaging 20.1 disposals per game and kicking 16 goals.

“I’ve been really happy with my year so far,” Miles said.

“I think I’ve been consistent for most of the year and I’m hoping I can break into the AFL team one day either this year or over the next couple of years.

“I’m just going to keep working hard and trying to perform consistently at Box Hill (to push for an opportunity).”

Hawthorn recruiting and list manager Graham Wright said Miles’ continued development had been pleasing.

“Teia has been an AFL emergency on multiple occasions and we think he’s a real chance to push into the AFL team either this year or over the next two years, as a versatile defender who can also play forward or rotate through the middle,” Wright said.

“We’ve been really happy with his development in the VFL and look forward to seeing him continue to improve.”

Whether it’s in attack or defence, Miles - who joined the club with pick 49 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft - is focused on continuing to improve his game.

“I played a majority of the pre-season games as a forward, and as the year started I went down back,” he said.

“Something I can really focus on is the defensive side of my game… and finding the right balance between offence and defence.

“It’s really good (having so many experienced players to learn from).

“No matter what you’re asking for help with – going through vision, having an extra kick at training or even playing basketball – they’re always up for a bit of fun, and when it’s time to get serious they’re always willing to help you out.”
