Not the result we were after today, but we’ll be back. Mitch outstanding with 36 touches, Poppy and Gunners finished with three goals each.
The Rundown
Hawthorn wasn’t able to overcome arch rival Geelong on Easter Monday this year, going down by 30 points to a new-look Cats’ side.
After a sluggish first half, the Hawks produced five goals to Geelong’s none in the third term to put themselves back in the hunt for a win.
But the Cats fired back strongly in the last term, kicking seven goals to run away with the victory.
To rub salt into the wound, Luke Hodge broke his arm in the dying stages of the game after a collision with Geelong midfielder Mitch Duncan.
Paul Puopolo and Jack Gunston kicked three goals apiece, while Luke Breust and Will Langford both kicked two.
The Star
Sam Mitchell was the star for the Hawks, racking up 36 disposals and eight clearances in an excellent individual performance.
The Moment
With the Hawks fighting back midway through the third term, Lewis found Shaun Burgoyne in space with a clever handball. Burgoyne sized up his options and drilled a classy long range goal to bring the margin back to just nine points.
The Coach
“We started the game slowly, worked our way back into it in the second quarter, played a really good third quarter and gave ourselves a chance at three quarter time. We just played really poorly in the last quarter.” – Alastair Clarkson
