OUTGOING Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell has revealed the cheeky text message skipper Luke Hodge sent him after he was officially traded to West Coast on Friday morning.
"He (Hodge) did text me this morning once he heard about it and he goes, 'Did you just get traded for pick 88?'" Mitchell told NAB AFL Trade Radio.
"There was a bit more to the text, which I won't share, but it was something along the lines of, 'Look forward to running into you next year.'"
Indicative draft order: What picks will your club take to the draft
Mitchell, a four-time premiership player and five-time best and fairest winner, joined the Eagles on Friday, along with picks No.54 and 72 in exchange for picks No.52, 70 and 88.
The star midfielder accepted his fifth Peter Crimmins Medal and conceded the best and fairest night, held earlier this month, was "awkward" because he knew that would likely be the last function he attended as a Hawthorn player.
"I must admit that was quite an awkward night," Mitchell said.
"Knowing that five or six people that know something about it (the trade) and the other 1,000 or 1,200 in the room don't know, it was a little bit uncomfortable," Mitchell said.
"I was kind of hoping it would happen (the trade) so I had a little bit of fear and hope this wouldn't put too much pressure on Hawthorn."
Mitchell also revealed he did give a couple of clues away about his intentions to move to the west in his acceptance speech.
"I said that Hawthorn is at an interesting time and there's going to be some changes, and they're going to be exciting changes," Mitchell said.
"That was my way of saying there might be something new around the corner."
