HAWTHORN utility Dallas Willsmore is in red-hot form at VFL level and hoping to press his case for an AFL debut in 2016.
Willsmore has been among Box Hill Hawks’ best performers in every match this season, playing a key role in their 4-0 start to the season.
“It’s been a really good start for us,” Willsmore told hawthornfc.com.au.
“We’re 4-0 and playing some good footy in patches, but we’ve still got a lot of improvement to go. If we can start putting those four-quarter performances in, we’ll keep on winning games – hopefully.”
The 20-year-old – now in his third year at the club – has had no trouble finding the ball in 2016.
He’s averaging 27 disposals per game, in consistent fashion, with tallies of 28, 26, 27 and 27 disposals.
“I’m going alright this year, I think I’m just playing more consistently throughout the four quarters,” Willsmore said.
“Last year I was good for a couple of quarters and then quiet for a couple of quarters.
“It’s good to be backing up each game. I’m just trying to do everything I can to give myself a chance of senior selection.”
Willsmore has already been named as a senior emergency in 2016, suggesting the coaches are keeping a close eye on the Walpeup-Underbool product.
He's earned praise from Box Hill Hawks coach Marco Bello - who said his performance against Frankston on the weekend was terrific.
"He acquitted himself really well – he finished with 27 disposals, had nine marks and hit the scoreboard a couple of times too... a terrific game from him, and a consistent month of footy," Bello said
Willsmore says working smarter – with some help from Sam Mitchell – is paying dividends.
“I’m running smarter this year and getting into better positions, I think that’s the main thing that’s helped me get more of the footy,” Willsmore said.
“I’ve been doing a lot of work with Sam Mitchell.
“He’s a master at what he does – finding the footy and disposing of it, so he’s been a real help for me.”
While Willsmore has found plenty of the ball for Box Hill this year, it’s been in a multitude of positions.
The skilful left-footer – drafted to Hawthorn primarily as a forward in the 2014 Rookie Draft – has played in almost every position on the ground.
He readily admits he's still got plenty improvement to come, but sees that flexibility as a real string to his bow, as he pushes for a debut.
“I’ve played everywhere… half-forward, wing, inside mid on the weekend, which was a good experience. So I’ve got a bit of knowledge of that role now, but I still need to improve on that,” Willsmore said.
“I hope my versatility can help me push for selection in the senior side.”
