HAWTHORN development coach Chris Newman evaluates every Hawthorn-listed player's performance at VFL level in Round 10.
The Hawks' VFL affiliate went down by 36 points to Northern Blues on Saturday.
KURT HEATHERLEY
“Kurt probably had his best game for the year. The best thing about his game was he had 22 disposals – certainly the highest amount of disposals he’s had this year – but he complemented that with 23 pressure acts. He had a really good balance between his offensive and defensive game, and had five inside 50s as well."
JONATHAN O’ROURKE
“Jono was pretty important for us. He had five clearances and we weren’t getting first use (from our rucks), so for him to get that amount of clearances was really good. He had 16 pressure acts, took seven marks and had three tackles. He worked up and down the ground and worked pretty hard all day.
KIERAN LOVELL
“Lovey was the same (as Jono). He had seven clearances and a lot of contested ball. His ability to use his legs out of traffic and out of the stoppage is elite, so if we can have him doing that more times than not it’s really important for us."
DALLAS WILLSMORE
“Dall had a really good start to the game. He had a really good first quarter and kicked a couple of goals – our best quarter was the first quarter and he impacted the game. I think we were quite predictable with our ball movement (after quarter time), so Dall wasn’t getting used as much as he should have. His work-rate was still high and he still finished with 21 disposals and three goals.”
KAIDEN BRAND
“KB was good for us, he was really important in the first half. We ended up throwing him in the ruck rotation and forward, but it didn’t quite have the impact we wanted. We felt with their dominant rucks that we could possibly get something around the ground from KB and more of a contest down forward, but we didn’t have a lot of the ball in the third quarter. He had a solid game – 16 disposals – and his ability to take marks off oppo boot is elite.”
TEIA MILES
“Milesy kicked 2.1, so he’s still hitting the scoreboard and pushing forward to impact for us there. It probably wasn’t his most damaging game, but he was still trying to get involved and make things happen offensively. The best thing about Milesy is he’s getting in positions where he’s putting himself under the footy – forcing himself to spoil the ball or sit under the ball to take marks. He’s starting to pick up that balance between offense and defence, which is great for his game.”
ZAC WEBSTER
“Webby did some really tough stuff in and around the ball. He kicked two goals, which was really important for us. He has the ability to play forward and go into the midfield – he’s a bigger body and he hits the opposition hard. He had 13 pressure acts and I think he had four or five tackles, which is really good. He improved on last week’s game and he’s missed a lot of footy, so we look forward to seeing him continue to improve."
BRENDAN WHITECROSS
“Whitey wasn’t too bad… he played more midfield/forward in the first three quarters, then we threw him in the back half to see if we could get some run and carry from him. He impacted a few plays when he went down back, so it’s good we’ve got the flexibility to throw Whitey back there. He finished with 17 pressure acts – he gives everything every week."
JERMAINE MILLER-LEWIS
“JJ was good, he got back to his aggressive best. He really hits the opposition body hard and he ended up with 13 disposals, which was an improvement on the past couple of weeks. We’ll look for him to build on that again (next week). His pressure was outstanding in and around the contest, and he just gives 100 per cent each week.”
BLAKE HARDWICK
“Blake played forward for a lot of the day. His tackle pressure is elite, so he provides some really good pressure in and around the contest, but we would probably like to see him get a bit more of the football. We want the ball in his hands as much as possible. He didn’t impact the scoreboard this week - he kicked one behind - so we’re looking forward to seeing what he can provide next week.”
LACHLAN LANGFORD
“Lachie’s GPS numbers every week are among the best, so there’s no doubting his work-rate. If you play forward you need the ability to not only attack, but defend, and Lachie’s certainly got the tank to do that. He didn’t impact the scoreboard – he kicked a behind – but his tackle pressure was quite good, he finished with five tackles. It was an improvement on Lachie’s game the previous week, and hopefully he can continue on that upward trend."
