Shaun Burgoyne showed no signs of slowing down in 2016, producing some outstanding football at crucial times for Hawthorn in close games.
The 31-year-old played 24 games this season and played in a variety of positions – often starting in defence, but being shifted into the midfield or even into the forward 50 when the Hawks needed something extra in those areas.
His withering final-quarter burst against the Sydney Swans in Round 17 which ended in 26 disposals, two goals, 11 tackles and 10 clearances played a crucial role in getting Hawthorn over the line highlighted just how capable he is of playing on in 2017.
With Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis both moving on in recent times, Burgoyne’s wealth of leadership and experience will be called upon next year as the Hawks undergo a number of changes in personnel.
A word from: Damian Carroll
“Shaun played every game again this season, so his durability has been terrific over the past couple of seasons.
“Going along with that, we thought his impact during the season was really important for us; he was able to get us across the line in some close games and at important stages he was moved into the midfield to help us win more of the footy and kick an important goal.
“He also played some forward line and spent a lot of time in defence, so his versatility to our side is an important part of what makes him a terrific footballer.
“Hopefully he can keep his body together and continue to churn out good footy and a lot of games next year.”
