1. Leadership brings out the best in Lewis
After a couple of quiet weeks – by his own high standards – Jordan Lewis was back at his prolific best against Richmond.
The stand-in skipper collected 28 disposals, seven clearances and laid seven tackles to lead from the front in the Hawks’ 46-point win.
In a side without fellow leaders Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Jarryd Roughead, Lewis’ impact on the contest was pivotal – and he’s now got a 3-0 record as skipper in 2016.
2. Hawks break even in the contest
There was plenty of talk about clearances and contested football in the lead-up to the game, and the Hawks found a response against the Tigers.
The Tigers controlled the contest early, before the Hawks hit back to level the clearances (40-40), win the tackle count (76-74) and almost draw level in terms of contested possessions (137-142).
Nine players polled multiple clearances for the Hawks, while both Paul Puopolo (11) and Will Langford (10) hit double figures for contested possessions.
3. Small forwards have big impact
Not for the first time this season, Hawthorn’s small forwards had a big impact on the contest.
Luke Breust finished with six goals, Paul Puopolo kicked three and Cyril Rioli kicked one – with both Breust and Rioli earning votes from the coaches for their performances.
Breust now leads the Hawks’ goal-kicking with 17 majors, closely followed by Jack Gunston (16), Puopolo (15), Rioli (14) and James Sicily (12).
4. Young Hawks step up
Friday night’s side was one of the most inexperienced line-ups that the Hawks have fielded in a long time – with five players entering the game with less than 10 AFL games to their name.
But that mattered for little – with the Hawks’ youngsters looking the part on the big stage.
Debutant Kaiden Brand was solid in defence, second-gamer Kieran Lovell showed some signs in the midfield, and Daniel Howe, James Sicily and Tim O’Brien continued to play their respective roles.
5. Responding from a loss
This time last week, the Hawks’ credentials as contenders were being challenged.
But after a disappointing loss to the Giants, the Hawks found the perfect response against Richmond on Friday night – despite missing a handful of important players.
It’s the 11th consecutive occasion that the Hawks have bounced back immediately from a loss. The last time the Hawks lost back-to-back games was in Round 9, 2014.
