THE Peter Crimmins Medal holds a special place at Hawthorn.

Some of the most famous Hawthorn names have won the coveted best and faired award, which is now named after legendary Hawk Peter Crimmins.

The first Hawthorn best and fairest was awarded in 1925, the same year the club joined the VFL.

Despite undergoing a couple of name changes in the 1920’s (it was originally known as the Best All-Rounder), it was officially changed to the Best and Fairest Award in 1929.

The honour was originally decided by player votes until 1932 when the Club’s committee took over the voting, but now the coaching staff now hold the responsibility of casting votes.

The award underwent yet another name change in 1985, renamed the Club Champion, before it was changed one final time in 2004 to the Peter Crimmins Medal.

Crimmo's Cup - The story behind the Hawks' 1976 triumph and the famous photo

This was to honour the memory of Crimmins, who passed away just two days after the Hawthorn’s 1976 premiership triumph.

Crimmins was a premiership player with the Hawks in 1971, before captaining the club in the 1974 and 1975 seasons.

Leigh Matthews won an incredible eight best and fairest awards during his playing career, with the esteemed foursome of John Kennedy Sr, Jason Dunstall, Shane Crawford and Sam Mitchell all winning four – Mitchell has the chance to win his fifth Peter Crimmins Medal tomorrow night.

The Peter Crimmins Medal will be broadcast live on hawthornfc.com.au.
