Hardwick has earmarked himself as a player to watch over the next couple of years as he continues his development in the AFL system.
Having played most of the 2016 season with Box Hill at VFL level, Hardwick made his AFL debut in Round 19 this year after Cyril Rioli was a late withdrawal against Carlton.
He collected eight disposals and three tackles against the Blues in Launceston, and while they might not seem like huge numbers, it was a step in the right direction for the first-year player.
Breaking into a forward line containing Cyril Rioli, Luke Breust and Paul Puopolo is not easy, so he may have to play some more VFL football next season if the Hawks have their best side available at AFL level.
But another pre-season under his belt will provide him with a legitimate claim of playing more senior football for Hawthorn in 2017.
A word from Brett Ratten
“Played his first game, which is a credit to him. To think he’s developed from 12 months ago playing TAC Cup footy to playing a senior AFL game is a great result.
“He’s hard at it, can hit the scoreboard and with another pre-season under his belt he’ll continue to develop and keep playing games of footy for us.
“Blake’s always eager to learn and one that shows some really good ability.”
