JARRYD Roughead says he is still an active member of Hawthorn’s 2016 finals campaign, despite being unable to play as he continues treatment for melanoma.

Speaking on Gold 104.3 this morning, Roughead said he is passing on his knowledge to the younger players who could play a part in September.

“I’m just there to help out the young boys who haven’t been a part of a finals series, obviously I’ve got the knowledge from the last few years and some of these guys who have come in haven’t played a finals series – so in a sense I’m like a bigger brother to them,” Roughead said.

“You just tell them to enjoy it – because who knows if they’re ever going to get back there again.

“You don’t want to over-stress and have to worry, but at the same time you want to sit back and soak in a finals campaign, because this is what you play footy for.”

Young players aren’t the only one’s seeking Roughead’s counsel, with coach Alastair Clarkson also bouncing ideas off his key forward in the coaches’ box on game day.

“I sit in the box. It’s very interesting – Clarko will ask questions: what am I seeing (on the field) or what do I think, along with Brett Ratten who’s our forward line coach,” he said.

“I’m confident enough to voice my opinion. I think being there for 12 years and having that relationship with Clarko helps.”

Roughead said his treatment is tracking along as planned after the star forward announced earlier this year he had suffered a recurrence of melanoma.

“I’ve been through 12 weeks of everything so far and it’s all going well,” he said.

“I’ve just finished the third and fourth bout of the initial treatment and we look forward to a scan in the next couple of weeks to work out where it’s at.

“You get (the treatment) every three weeks because there’s a couple of drugs – it gives you a couple of weeks to try and soak it all up make sure it works.

“The first one wasn’t too bad, that was where I was lucky enough to go away (to the US), but after the second and third ones you do notice it a bit and you have your ups and downs.”

Roughead said it was terrific to have the support of both the football and wider communitites.

“This isn’t like the weekend where you’ve got two sides to pick from, you know everyone is on my side with this,” he said.

“So knowing you’ve got everyone’s support there is amazing.

“All signs are positive – that’s what we want and that’s what I’m expecting, there’s nothing really else I think about.”
