It’s the 29th of October 2000.
Queensland native Nick Riewoldt has been taken with the first pick of the national draft; a man St Kilda fans hope will be the catalyst of improving their struggling club’s fortunes.
Justin Koschitzke is the next name called out, set to follow Riewoldt to Moorabin, before a young South Australian by the name of Alan Didak becomes a Magpie.
Fast forward nine more picks and a teammate of Didak’s at the Port Adelaide Magpies is taken by the Power.
His name is Shaun Burgoyne.
Read: From the nervous to the newcomers
Having turned 18 the previous week, Burgoyne already had a level of familiarity with the competition’s then-youngest club with his brother Peter having notched 33 games in the black, white, silver and teal.
The pair would go on to play nine seasons together, including the 2004 premiership.
In 2001, while the younger of the Burgoyne brothers was forced to ply his trade in the SANFL, Peter recorded 22 senior games and announced himself as a budding star of the competition.
His year got better in October of that year when he became a father for the first time, with Trent Burgoyne born on the 2nd of October 2001.
So, why is any of this relevant to a Hawks fan?
Well, Trent was taken by Port Adelaide with Pick 22 in last week’s rookie draft.
Born just shy of a year after Shaun first entered the league, the uncle and nephew may share a field together in 2020.
A week after Shaun and Peter became one of now 22 sets of siblings to appear in a Grand Final winning team together, Trent celebrated his third birthday.
Trent and Shaun will have two opportunities to face each other in the upcoming season, in Round 10 at UTAS Stadium and Round 19 at Adelaide Oval.
This one will certainly be one to watch as these match-ups draw closer next year.
