Rarely would one top the class before being told there is a lot to be improved on yet.

But Hawthorn Physical Performance Manager Luke Boyd foresees a lot of progression in the running capacity of the club’s new time trial king, Finn Maginness.

Maginness recently put an end to Isaac Smith’s five-year tenure at the top of the Hawks’ time trial mountain, taking out the pre-season’s prestigious event in fine fashion.

“Finn had a great run, especially given it was his first time trial with our group,” Boyd said.

“I think the exciting thing he still has quite a bit of aerobic improvement in him.

“I think he will take us all by surprise again when we test again next year.”

Among the others that caught Boyd’s eye was reigning Peter Crimmins Medallist James Worpel.

“Worps recorded a PB and showed a fair bit of improvement since our last time trial earlier this pre-season.

“CJ and Big Boy were another two that really stood out.”

In the alternate testing of 11x200m sprints, Boyd made note of an athletic key position pair.

“Jaeger O’Meara flew in that one and Mitch Lewis ran a time that we expect from midfielders which is impressive as a big key forward.

“Michael Hartley, another big fella, was also a strong performer.”
