Hawthorn Football Club would like to update our members and fans on the current situation surrounding the 2020 season, following President Jeff Kennett’s letter to members earlier today.
We have been informed that the club’s Round 1 clash against Brisbane will go ahead as planned, however the match will be played in front of an empty stadium in an effort to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
In a statement released today, the AFL advised that while the season will continue, no fans will be permitted to attend matches until otherwise advised.
The news comes following advice from the Federal Government that all mass gatherings of over 500 people should be cancelled as of Monday 16th March.
CEO Justin Reeves said while it is disappointing Hawthorn members won’t be in attendance, the club fully accepts the advice handed down by the AFL and governing health authorities.
“The health and safety of our players, staff, members, fans and the community at large should and will remain our number one priority,” Reeves said.
“While this is an extremely disappointing situation, the club will work in the best interests of our members and supporters to provide opportunities for all to remain connected with the club and each other.
“It remains unclear how long these restrictions will be in place, but we will continue to provide updates to our members as this situation evolves.”
