A pair of key Hawks are facing a race against the clock to prove their fitness ahead of Round 1 this Sunday.

After injuring his ankle in the Marsh Community Series loss to Melbourne in Launceston, Mitch Lewis is nearing a return to full fitness.

Physical Performance Manager Luke Boyd said the young key forward had made strong progress in his recovery in the past week.

"Mitch struggled a bit in the first week but he started to get going mid last week," Boyd said.

"We obviously have a game in five days which he will be touch and go for but at the moment he is a test to play."

After an injury-interrupted summer, Jack Gunston is also looking closer to a return to the field.

"Jack has been back in the ball program for the past four weeks now and did some 18 v 18 with the main group last week.

"He has a few more boxes he needs to tick but he will have more of an opportunity later in the week to prove his fitness."
