PREMIERSHIP player Will Langford will be joined by brother Lachlan at the Hawks in 2015 after he was picked up in Wednesday’s Rookie Draft.
Taken with pick 53 overall, Lachlan joins the Hawks from Melbourne Grammar School after also training briefly at the Hawks this year.
Langford is one of four additions to complete Hawthorn’s 2015 playing list, with midfielder Jared Hardisty (pick 18) and forward Jermaine Miller-Lewis (pick 36) two other new faces.
Ruckman/forward Sam Grimley (pick 65), meanwhile officially re-joined the Club after being delisted last month.
Sons of Club great Chris Langford, Lachlan and Will will be the first brother to play together at the Hawks since Shane and Justin Crawford in the 1990s.
Despite only playing a handful of games for Melbourne Grammar, Lachlan impressed as a half forward with his athleticism and marking ability.
While Will is a premiership midfielder for the Hawks, Lachlan, who currently stands at 189cm, is likely to develop into a key position player like his father, who was a champion full back.
Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said it was exciting to have another Langford join the Hawks.
“Having another Langford at the Club is great, we’re rapt to be able to give Lachie a chance and see where he can go in the next couple of years,” Wright told hawthornfc.com.au
“He played at Melbourne Grammar only this year, he played about five or six games for them but we had him out here and did a bit of work with him.
“He’s exciting; he’s nearly 190cm, he’s athletic, has long arms and can mark the footy.
“We think in time, he’ll be more like a key position player but at this stage he can play that high half forward role.
“He has good endurance, kicks the ball well.”
A tough inside midfielder, Hardisty adds to Hawthorn’s midfield depth after the retirement of veteran Brad Sewell and the departure of Mitch Hallahan to Gold Coast.
He has good endurance, having recorded a 15.4 in the beep test.
“He’s a really good tough, hard inside midfielder and we think he’ll fit in really well,” Wright said of Hardisty.
“He has really good endurance – I think everyone will be surprised of that when they see him but he’s able to run and combine that with being really tough and hard.
“He uses the ball well inside, needs to improve his kick a little bit but we’re happy to get him.”
Despite not having played football in 2014 due to injury, Wright is excited about the addition of Miller-Lewis from South Fremantle.
His year was ruined shin splints at the end of 2013 and then an ankle injury but Wright isn’t concerned given the youngster is already back training for 2015.
A smart player with great speed, Miller-Lewis has good goal sense and plenty of x-factor.
“He’s very exciting,” Wright said.
“We know he’s a real excitement machine – he’s quick, he’s powerful, he can jump and mark the footy.
“He’s another one who needs to improve his kick a little bit and given he hasn’t played a lot of footy, will need to work on his endurance.
“He has a real x-factor about him so we’re really excited to bring him in.”
Committed to re-drafting Grimley after delisting him in October, the Hawks honoured that promise on Wednesday morning.
Grimley will now re-commence training and Wright says the Hawks expect him to work hard over the pre-season.
“Obviously he was disappointed to be delisted but we always planned to take him back as a rookie if he was available for us,” Wright said.
“It’s up to him now to have a really big pre-season to jump back into it and hopefully push up for senior selection next year.”
The addition of four rookies completes Hawthorn’s 2015 playing list after acquiring Daniel Howe, Teia Miles and Marc Pittonet in last Thursday night’s National Draft.
The five youngsters join free agent recruit James Frawley and former GWS Giant Jonathon O’Rourke who joined the Hawks during the free agency and trade period.
“We think we’ve got good depth at all the positions and good talent at all the positions as well,” Wright said.
“We’ll just hope we have some luck with injury along the way and hope we’re a chance again next year and qualify high enough to push into September again.
“As we know, there are no guarantees with it but we’re happy with the list we’ve put together.”
