The Hawks travelled to Adelaide to take on the Crows in Round 6 last year, the last meeting between the two sides.
Hawthorn prevailed on that occasion, securing an 11-point win in a tight contest at AAMI Stadium.
The Hawks jumped out of the blocks early, taking a four-goal lead into the first change before the Crows turned the tables, kicking four goals to one in the second quarter to reduce Hawthorn’s lead to just two points at the main break.
The second half was a tight one, with the Hawks edging the Crows by kicking seven goals to six to eventually secure victory.
Four of those seven Hawthorn goals came in a seven-minute burst from the eight-minute mark of the final term.
The Hawks had to come from behind in the last quarter and it took some heroics from their guns – Luke Hodge was inspiring with 29 disposals, seven inside 50s, five clearances and a goal, while Sam Mitchell also picked up 29 touches, six rebound 50s and six inside 50s.
Jack Gunston was the leading goal kicker with three (including two in a third-quarter burst) but two crucial goals from Luke Breust in the final term helped the Hawks steal victory.
For the Crows, Patrick Dangerfield was outstanding with 35 disposals, nine clearances and two goals and Rory Sloane had 29 touches.
Josh Jenkins was Adelaide’s most dangerous forward but he was left to rue missed opportunities, particularly in the second term, finishing with 2.4.
What the coaches said
Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson: "They're tough to beat in Adelaide ... to win in those circumstances, no matter what the margin, is an outstanding result for our club."
Adelaide’s Brenton Sanderson: "The effort's there, the boys crashed and bashed, and there should be some players at our footy club that would be really proud of their performance.
"We gave it everything we had and unfortunately came up short."
