Hawthorn cruised to a 99-point victory over Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium in Round 4 this season, the last meeting between the two sides.

Despite the scoreline and the ease in which Hawthorn was able to create scoring chances, the game was a physically taxing one, with several players leaving the field with bumps and bruises across the night.

Despite making a bright start to the year, winning two of their first four games, the Suns found the going tough and were dominated by a slick Hawthorn midfield that was polished with their disposal despite the greasy and humid conditions.

Hawthorn’s forward line fired on all cylinders, with Jack Gunston earning best on ground honours for his five-goal effort, while Jarryd Roughead booted four, Cyril Rioli and Luke Breust two each and David Hale and Paul Puopolo chipping in with singles of those who spend most of their time inside forward 50.

But in the midfield it was Sam Mitchell (36 disposals, six clearances) and Luke Hodge (31 and six inside 50s) who did the most damage, while Matt Suckling had his best game since returning from a knee reconstruction with 30 disposals and two goals off half-back.

Will Langford was outstanding in his ability to nullify the influence of Gary Ablett who despite winning 35 touches, his influence was down on his usual standards.

Josh Gibson was also brilliant in defence, with his ability to combine his defensive and attacking work at its best. He picked up 31 touches from full back.

The Hawks were dominant, with four players (Mitchell, Hodge, Gibson, Suckling) winning 30 or more disposals and eight players with 20 or more.

For the Suns, David Swallow was important through the middle with 27 disposals but his side was well beaten by the Hawks who flexed their muscle, particularly in the second half by kicking 12 goals to one to run away with a 99-point win.
