Vale Phil Ryan
The Club mourns the passing of former President, Phil Ryan.
Ryan gave 38 years of continuous service to the Club, which included 52 games as a player between 1941-47 and eleven years as president from 1968-79.
In his tenure Ryan set a standard as president that is without parallel in Club history, which included three premierships (1971, 1976 and 1978) and the consolidation of Hawthorn’s financial resources.
Ryan also served as vice president (1948-52), chairman of selectors (1948-52) and Club treasurer (1953-67) during his time as a respected official at Glenferrie Road.
He was awarded life membership in 1951, was a vocal opponent of the proposed merger in 1996 and inducted into the Hawthorn Football Club Hall of Fame in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to the Club.
Hawthorn Chief Executive Officer Stuart Fox extended his deepest sympathies to Phil’s family, friends and former teammates.
“The Board of Directors, management, staff and players of Hawthorn Football Club wish to extend their sincerest condolences to Mavis and the Ryan family at this sad time,” he said.
“Phil epitomised the spirit of Hawthorn and is an icon of our Club.”
“As a past player, past president, life member, supporter and devotee of the Club, Phil will be remembered for his cheerfulness and dedication to all things brown and gold."
