Hawthorn overcame a spirited Carlton to record their 10th straight win over the Blues in the last meeting between the two sides, in Round 12 last season.
The win at Etihad Stadium elevated the Hawks back to the top of the ladder, as they twice overcame 17-point deficits in the third quarter to eventually run out 15-point victors.
The Hawks kicked nine goals to five in the second half, including four goals to two in a frantic final quarter despite being outplayed for most of the match.
Jarryd Roughead (four goals), Lance Franklin (four) and Jack Gunston (three) combined for 11 of Hawthorn’s 15 goals, providing headaches for a Carlton defence ill-equipped to handle the potency of Hawthorn’s forward mix.
As usual, Sam Mitchell was outstanding in the midfield, collecting another 24 disposals and six clearances, while Grant Birchall was again good off half back with 23 touches and six inside 50s.
But the Hawks were smashed in the middle, losing the clearances 51-30, including 18 Carlton centre clearances to just eight for the Hawks.
Bryce Gibbs led the way for the Blues with 28 touches and five clearances, while Chris Judd and Brock McLean were the dominant clearances players on the ground with nine each.
Eddie Betts was dangerous up forward with three goals and Jarrad Waite booted two.
The Blues viewed the loss as an opportunity missed, while the Hawks did well to steal victory.
