HAWTHORN star Jarryd Roughead says the disappointment of losing last year’s decider won’t come into the side’s thinking as the Hawks prepare for a second straight Grand Final.
Speaking to media at the Ricoh Centre on Saturday, Roughead declared the focus is more on making sure everyone enjoys the week ahead, rather than dwelling on the past.
Bradley Hill, Max Bailey and Brian Lake will play in their first Grand Final next Saturday.
“I don’t think so,” Roughead said of remembering last year’s loss.
“The whole group has changed a fair bit and we don’t want to be remembering losses with some of the boys who didn’t play last year, we want to make their experience of this week a very good one and build their confidence up so on Saturday, we’re all right to go and don’t need to worry about last year.”
Like last year’s thrilling win over Adelaide in the Preliminary Final, the Hawks had to overcome a ferocious Geelong who seemed to have one foot in the Grand Final at three-quarter time.
The Cats led by 20 points at the final change and had all the momentum after Jordan Murdoch snapped a goal with seconds remaining in the quarter.
But after a tight opening five minutes in the final term, it was Hawthorn who finished full of running, perhaps showing the benefits of having last weekend off.
The Hawks had 12 scoring shots to two in the last quarter and it took heroics from each of the 22 players to finally overcome a side it hadn’t beaten since 2008.
“There was a Grand Final at stake, so we knew we had to come good in that last quarter and we did,” Roughead said.
“We are one of the better last quarter teams in the comp I think, so to do it again was good.”
The Hawks will play the winner of tonight’s Preliminary Final between Fremantle and Sydney at Patersons Stadium.
But Roughead concedes the Hawks don’t care who they play.
“We’re in a Grand Final, in doesn’t really matter – you still have to beat either one of the two so no doubt everyone will be watching and we’ll wait and see,” he said.
