Cyril Rioli, Brian Lake and Paul Puopolo are set to miss the second round of the Hawks’ NAB Cup campaign after sustaining injuries in the Club’s opening hit out against Gold Coast and Brisbane at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.

Rioli injured his ankle in the one-point loss to Gold Coast, and didn’t play in the Club’s second match against the Lions.

General Manager – Football Operations Mark Evans said Rioli was sore after the first game.

“Cyril rolled his ankle in the first game and pulled up a bit sore afterwards,” Evans said.

“He’ll wear a moonboot for a couple of days to protect the ankle, and we expect he’ll miss a couple of weeks.”

Evans also explained Lake experienced some calf tightness in the team’s first match.

“Brian tightened up a bit in the calf during the first game and won’t play this week,” he said.

“We’ll see how he goes heading into the third round.”

Puopolo hyper-extended his knee in a marking contest in the dying stages of the loss to Gold Coast.

“He’s got some bone bruising and we’ll have to see how it settles down in the coming days,” Evans said.

“After hyper-extending the knee in a marking contest Paul was able to jog off the ground, which is usually a fairly good sign.”

“At this stage a timeframe on his return is unknown, and we’ll be guided by how the injury site settles.”

Hawthorn takes on Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Friday night in game two of the NAB Cup.
