HAWTHORN won't be using its Grand Final loss as motivation when it tackles Sydney at the MCG on Saturday night.
While many will be casting their minds back to the events of the last Saturday in September ahead of Saturday night's Grand Final re-match, that won't be the case in the inner sanctum of Hawthorn.
It will be the first time the Hawks face their Grand Final counterparts since the last Saturday in September, when the Swans were crowned premiers of the AFL for 2012.
But Vice-Captain Jordan Lewis says the Grand Final loss won’t come into Hawthorn's calculations.
Instead, the Hawks will search for inspiration to tackle the Sydney of 2013, rather than motivate itself to take on the same side it faced in 2012.
“I don’t think last year’s Grand Final will come into our calculations at all,” Lewis said after Hawthorn’s 11-point win over Adelaide on Saturday.
“We’ve got to motivate ourselves every week, whether it’s the side we lost to in the Grand Final or not.”
Lewis also says the team will set its own goals during the week as it prepares to attack a Sydney team brimming with confidence.
“Every week is different and we’ll set little goals and focuses this week,” he said.
“Every match is different, you have different focuses heading into each match as well so we’ll sit down and motivate ourselves.”
Defender Brian Lake echoed Lewis’ sentiments on Monday.
Ahead of his 200th AFL match, Lake says his teammates haven’t spoken a lot about the Grand Final since turning their attention to the Swans.
“Any time you lose a Grand Final, it’s never easy,” Lake said at the Ricoh Centre on Monday.
“To the guys’ credit, we haven’t talked about it too much.”
The Hawks are instead focusing on taking their win-loss record to 6-1 when it tackles a tough opponent on Saturday night.
“We knew it was a tough start to the season and for us to be 5-1 up against Sydney now, if we can get over the line and go to 6-1 it’ll be a pretty good start (to the year),” Lake said.
