With the finals looming, both Geelong and Hawthorn needed to win to have any chance of finishing in the top 8 and in front of a crowd of just over 30,000 people, neither team held back. Nick Holland and Trent Croad were great in front of goal while Shane Crawford and Daniel Harford were the stars of the show.
It was Geelong who drew blood first getting out to a 26 point lead before Holland pegged the margin back to 20 points just before quarter time. Crawford’s inspiring snap put the Hawks in front with just two minutes to go in the final term, while Michael Collica performed the last minute heroics, taking a contested pack mark to save the match.
