FIVE Hawthorn players are eligible for Free Agency at the end of season 2013, having spent eight or more seasons at the Club.

Lance Franklin is the player that attracted the most interest, given he put talks with the Club on hold in February.

Since then, a media frenzy has surrounded the star forward’s contract status, with Greater Western Sydney, Adelaide, Fremantle rumoured to have the cap space to accommodate a sizeable offer in the salary cap to secure Franklin.

On Wednesday, the Lions also threw their hat into the Franklin ring, declaring it has the cap space to offer the Hawks star a contract.

Franklin is a Restricted Free Agent, meaning Hawthorn has the right to match any offer made to Franklin from a rival club.

Max Bailey, Xavier Ellis, Brent Guerra and Michael Osborne are all out of contract and eligible for Free Agency at the end of this season.

The quartet are unrestricted Free Agents, meaning the Club does not have the right to match any accepted offer made by a rival club, and any of the four players can automatically join their new club.

The Hawks have already moved to secure key players, with Luke Hodge, Luke Breust, Ben Stratton, Tim O’Brien and David Hale all signing new contract in recent weeks.

Hawthorn lost Clinton Young to Collingwood at the end of last season after the premiership midfielder opted to accept a contract from the Pies and could automatically join them under the Unrestricted Free Agent rules.

Thomas Murphy also departed the Club under the same circumstances as her signed with Gold Coast.

How it works

A player has served seven seasons or less of AFL football at one club, and is now out of contract.
The player is not eligible for free agency if his club wishes to retain him. He may only move clubs via a trade or the Draft. If he delists himself, he is subject to the Draft, and may be selected by any club.

A player has served seven seasons or less of AFL football at one club, and has been delisted by his club.
The player is a Free Agent and is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs. The player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club. The player can move automatically to the new club of his choice.

His original club, which chose to delist him, does not receive any compensation pick for the loss of the player.

A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is one of the top 25 per cent highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since March 1 in his eighth season. (Restricted Free Agent)

If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft.

If the club does not or can not match the offer, the player can move to the new club of his choice.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.
