HAWTHORN midfielder Brad Sewell could miss only one week with a hamstring injury sustained in the win over West Coast on Sunday at Patersons Stadium.

Sewell was substituted out of the game in the third quarter of the match, but didn’t look in too much discomfort on the bench.

Scans on Monday revealed minor bleeding in his hamstring.

Head of Coaching and Development Chris Fagan said while Sewell won’t play against Collingwood on Sunday, the midfielder could be fit for the Club’s Round 4 clash against Fremantle in Tasmania.

“Unfortunately he had a little bit of a tweak to the back of his hammy, it’s nothing major but enough to keep him out this week,” Fagan said.

“He’ll be a test next week, it’s not a major hamstring injury so we’ll just have to wait and see how he progresses.”

The Hawks head into Sunday’s blockbuster against Collingwood with a relatively healthy list to choose from.

Captain Luke Hodge recovered well from his first match of the season against the Eagles.

The skipper gathered 25 disposals playing across half back and was one of the Hawks’ best in the 50-point win.

“He pulled up well, it was a tough test for him on a hot day on a big ground,” Fagan said.

“He stood up well like the rest of the players he was a little bit tired on return from the trip but at this stage of the week he’s recovered well and looking forward to playing on Sunday.”

In further good news for the Hawks, midfielder Brendan Whitecross is close to resuming as he ramps up his training with the aim of playing a competitive match in just over a month.

While the Club is taking a cautious approach with his return, Fagan said his form on the track and attitude throughout the rehabilitation process has been outstanding.

“He surprised us all (on Thursday), he looked like he’d been training for six months with the footballs,” Fagan said.

“He was up and about, but we expect Whitey to take another five to six weeks before he plays again, we’re being on the cautious side.

“His recovery from the knee reconstruction has been outstanding and the credit for that goes to our medical staff but also to Whitey himself who’s had a fantastic attitude towards it.”

Veteran forward Michael Osborne made a successful return to football after his knee reconstruction, getting through unscathed at Box Hill last Sunday.
