Playing without Hawthorn-listed players, Box Hill led at every change in blustery conditions to run out eventual 44 point winners against the Coburg Tigers in Craigieburn.
The final score didn’t truly reflect the evenness of the contest, thanks in large part to a six goal to one final quarter from the Hawks.
There appeared to be no love lost between the sides, in what was a surprisingly heated encounter for a practice match – with both teams using the game as an opportunity to prepare for the physicality of the regular season.
“I think both sides came to play and compete,” Box Hill coach Damian Carroll said.
“I don’t think [there] was too much untoward, but obviously tempers were a little bit there so thankfully we got everyone through on a clean sheet and look forward to playing Casey next week.”
Despite kicking into a strong wind in the opening term, the Hawks set the tone for the day early, getting off to a flying start by kicking the opening goal within a minute. The wind didn’t seem to bother the Hawks in front of goal as they opened the game kicking an accurate 5.1.
It wasn’t only the Hawks’ skills in front of goal that were impressive, but also their ability to hit targets when switching out of the backline and counterattack.
Tom Gordon was the beneficiary of one such play when he ended up as the final link in a chain that didn’t let the ball hit the deck from the back pocket until he put it through the big sticks at the other end of the field.
The game was shaping up as a nail biter heading into the final quarter, with the lead never more than 10 points at the end of each of the preceding quarters.
The Hawks midfield took over in the final term, however, dominating possession and seemingly winning every contested ball.
Former Gold Coast Suns players Sam Iles and Marc Lock were standouts in the midfield with 26 disposals and a goal apiece. Iles was crafty in close and dangerous when given space and, his goal the epitome of composure where he shrugged a tackle and took the time to straighten up from 40m.
Dalton Graham also had a strong performance with a four goals and 21 disposals. Graham showed great defensive fervour by leading the team in tackles with 10 for the game.
The win showcased the depth and strength of Box Hill’s list and, it’s exciting youngsters.
“There were six TAC Cup players who played the senior game today, first year out… a lot of young guys getting some exposure and performing well making it difficult at the selection table,” Carroll said.
“It’s obviously important that we have a strong Box Hill list and I think we showed that today.”
Next week will see the return of Hawthorn-listed players as Box Hill take on the Casey Scorpions at Casey Fields.
