HAWTHORN pair Shane Savage and Taylor Duryea have thrust their names before selectors ahead of Friday night's preliminary final against Geelong.
Savage bagged five goals and amassed 28 disposals in a near best-afield display in Box Hill's 52-point win over Werribee in a VFL preliminary final on Sunday.
At one point the small forward/midfielder appeared in trouble after taking a soaring mark and landing on his face, following a mid-air collision with veteran teammate Michael Osborne in the third quarter.
However, Savage quickly shook off the knock to kicked truly, and added a further two majors in the final term.
Duryea's lovely left foot wasn't always as precise as usual, but he gathered more than 20 disposals and benefited from a controversial workout.
The classy small defender had initially been ineligible to play the match because he hadn't played the required minimum of seven games in the VFL. He had played 18 in the AFL in a breakout season.
However, the Hawks gained special permission from AFL Victoria for Duryea to play, on the condition that teammates Matt Spangher and Jed Anderson – who both played in the AFL finals last week – weren't included.
It will be a clash between the Hawks and Cats at both AFL and VFL level next week, with Box Hill progressing to the VFL Grand Final against Geelong.
Osborne, 31, was in everything early and helped set the tone in the win over Werribee. He hasn't played at AFL level since round eight.
Other Hawthorn-listed players to perform strongly included Liston Trophy winner Mitch Hallahan (26 touches), father-son rookie Will Langford (24 touches and two goals) and defender Kyle Cheney.
Sam Grimley (three), Tim O'Brien (two), Luke Lowden (two) and Jonathon Ceglar (two) also got among the goals. Jonathan Simpkin slotted a superb major in the dying stages.
